Personalized Christmas gifts have one catch: they take time. A name has to be engraved before the gift can ship, so the usual "I'll grab something the week before" plan doesn't work. This guide skips the long gift list (we have one of those already) and focuses on the plan: when to order, where the gift goes on Christmas morning, what to engrave and how to hand it over.
Step 1: The order-by countdown
Work backward from December 25:

There's no expedited shipping, so December 7 is a firm cutoff, not a target. Order personalized gifts first, then shop for everything else.
Step 2: Under the tree or in the stocking?
- Under the tree: a personalized gift is often the one he opens last. Our journal comes in a black gift box, which gives it a proper unwrapping moment.

A simple rule: if it's the main gift from you, put it under the tree. If it's one of several, put it in the stocking.
Step 3: For the man who says "I don't need anything"
That usually means "no more clutter." Instead of three gadgets, give him one personal thing he'll use, and skip anything that feels like a chore, such as a kit to assemble or a device to set up. When in doubt, go subtle. A clean name or initials on a dark cover, like Black/Gold or Dark Brown/Black, looks classic. Loud slogans can make a gift feel like a novelty.
Step 5: Wrapping and presentation
- Write on page one before you wrap. One handwritten line, such as "Pappy, for the stories we keep asking about," is often the part he remembers.
- Add a pen under the ribbon so he can start writing right away.
- Let the family sign the back page if the gift is from everyone.
- Missed the cutoff? Print a card that says "Your engraved journal is on its way, Pappy," and wrap it with a pen.
